   Stop this Demolition

Historic buildingThe Council planning officer has recommended demolition of one of the few historic buildings left in the conservation area of central Peterborough. Despite the councils own historic buildings officer stating how important this building is and the Peterborough civic society view that demolition should not be agreed.

Ed Murphy has now contacted English Heritage to ask that an urgent listing request be considered. The building dates from 1837 and the proposed retail and flats development would be another eyesore. We are astonished that the council are even considering demolition let alone this being the recommendation for Tuesday's planning committee meeting.

The development application was refused and the application for demolition. Thanks to Andy and David who spoke up and the members for seeing the value of historic buildings and not voting on party lines (which you are not supposed to do at planning anyway). But we now need to come up with decent plans for improvement and making better use of historic buildings. Those who argued for profit failed this time.
