Expenses Sham

Outrage at £70,000 extra for Peterborough Tory Councillors.

Attempts by the new Tory Administration at Peterborough City Council are facing widespread public outrage and may have been scuppered by local opposition. Some good journalism by BBC radio Peterborough BBC staff uncovered an attempt by the councillors to award themselves more in expenses. They seem to be trying to play catch up with the local Tory MP who has so far claimed £66,00 for his second home and travel costs for his wife.

The current Tory leader of Peterborough Council said this morning that there was no additional money for councillor’s only additional jobs. However it is a fact that he is proposing an increase of £70,000 in councillor’s allowances. Remember the Tory MP said he had not claimed a second time for his swimming pool when he had. Even some Tory Councillors have now gone public and expressed opposition to these proposals. The ET and Heart radio have now also got the facts out on this story and the pressure is now on as the full council meeting in Peterborough tomorrow (wed 15 at 7pm). Many people have commented – what are the councillors doing making front line staff redundant and then awarding themselves more allowance payments.

Promoted by Ray Collins, General Secretary, the Labour Party, on behalf of the Labour Party, both at 39 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0HA.
