Labour candidate elected in Peterborough Bretton North By Election

In the first significant Peterborough poll since the expenses controversy and the drop in support for the main parties at the European election, Labour’s candidate did very well following on from the local campaigning and my visits to voters in Bretton North and I am pleased with the support given to  Stuart Martin the Labour Candidate in the Bretton North Parish Council by election held yesterday.

The result was very close with Labour second in the poll to an independent and Stuart only won his seat by two votes. However this marks a cautious return of support for Labour in Bretton with over a third of voters supporting us in yesterday’s poll.  There has been a swing against established parties here following the expenses controversy affecting many Westminster MPs and specifically the Conservative MP for Peterborough along with Conservative Councillors for Bretton investigated and disciplined over standards and conduct. The Conservative party for Peterborough did not have any official candidates standing, the conservative party machine did not find anyone living in Bretton to stand and there are deep divisions within the Peterborough Conservative association about the expenses and conduct issues.

Stuart Martin the newly elected Parish Councillor for North Bretton is a former Bretton city councillor and will increase the Labour numbers on the Parish to 3 members. He has lived most of is adult life and is well know as an activist within the Peterborough Labour movement

Promoted by Ray Collins, General Secretary, the Labour Party, on behalf of the Labour Party, both at 39 Victoria Street, London, SW1H 0HA.
