At the last General Election the Conservatives vowed to cut £12 billion from the welfare bill but were vague about exactly where the savings would be made, which in turn prompted people to ask David Cameron directly, and on more than one occasion, if the savings would be made by cutting Tax Credits, to which he responded with a categorical no. However, no sooner was the election out of the way, and before the dust had time to settle, they began to push through parliament huge cuts to tax credits despite promising the electorate they wouldn’t.

Changes in the voter registration system mean around one million people will be taken off the electoral register this year. Are you one of them?

You can’t vote in elections if you’re not registered to vote. Next year there will be major elections in Peterborough. And soon we have a big choice to make about whether Britain should stay in the European Union, but if you don’t register, you won’t be able to have your say.

You can register to vote in just three minutes at gov.uk/register-to-vote. You will need your National Insurance number, so make sure you have it ready. You can use this website on your smartphone.

Don’t forget that if you’re not registered to vote, you could be facing a fine of £80 and you might find it harder to get a credit card or a mobile phone contract. It may even be harder to get a passport!

The Tories have broken their promise to stand up for working families with a plan to change tax credits, which will leave working families £1,300 a year worse off.

The changes will affect three million working families. In Peterborough alone, around 12,500 families could be affected. Instead of helping working people, the Tories are pushing through changes which will hit working families in the wallet.

Tax Credits are designed to ensure that work pays. Cutting them undermines the value of work, and means penalising those who work hard day after day just to get by.

The Tories have not planned any help to protect affected families. 2.7 million families with children will be left out of pocket, and there is a real risk that children will suffer directly as a result of these changes.

Labour has launched a campaign to call on David Cameron to stop the tax credit cut. Please sign our petition at here.
