Ed Murphy is a well known local campaigner who has lived and worked in Peterborough for more than 40 years. He is active in neighbourhood, environment and development issues to save open spaces and fight out inappropriate developments and he is delighted to have the opportunity to become Peterborough's Labour MP at the next election.
Ed attended a local village primary school and later, while studying at the King's School, he worked part-time in Eye. He has lectured at Peterborough Regional College, helped establish the Step One and Housing Advice centres and has worked in housing, community development and regeneration. He is Programme Director for a charity based in Peterborough and lives in West Town.
Two of his key pledges are to establish a university in Peterborough and to ensure there is proper political representation for all. A long-standing member of the Co-operative Party, Ed believes that people will achieve more by working together than by working alone and he has a strong record of supporting people to seek progress through co-operative endeavour. He believes the only way to create a just and fair society is by giving power to all, regardless of wealth, class, gender or race.
Ed passionately supports the campaign to establish a university centre in Peterborough, recognising the opportunities this would offer to the city’s citizens of all ages and the benefits that increased skills and education levels would bring to the local economy.
Labour held the Peterborough seat until the last election. Ed Murphy has worked hard to increase registration of new voters and forged links with many community groups in order to increase electoral support. As a well known local resident, he has more in common with the voters than most politicians.
He was a Cambridgeshire County Councillor for ten years, winning the Peterborough Ravensthorpe ward where he grew up from the Lib Dems and putting the Conservatives in third place. He was a member of Cambridgeshire Policy Committee and Police Spokesperson as well as a member of the committee that established the National Crime Squad.
