Ed Murphy - Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Peterborough

I am delighted to have the opportunity to become the Peterborough MP, as the Labour candidate for the next election.

As a co-operator I believe that people will achieve more by working together than by working alone and I will support people to seek progress through co-operative endeavour. I believe the only way to create a just and fair society is through giving power to all our citizens. Power should be spread evenly throughout society and not be arbitrarily based on wealth, class, gender or race.

The reality is that we live in a managerial capitalist society where power is still held by an elite – some days I feel we are living in a benevolent dictatorship where politicians are unable to rock the boat for fear of upsetting the proprietors of the “Daily Mail”.

Anyway we can philosophise and interpret the world – the point is to change it. To a society made up of active citizens who are engaged in politics and decision making. We lost the last election by 2700 votes, when many traditional supporters did not turn out and significant numbers of Asian voters supported the Tory – who made false promises for which he has been found out. I have already taken steps to increase registration of new voters and made links with many groups in order to increase our electoral support by at least 5000.

There are many issues on which we shall campaign which are crucial to both local and parliamentary matters.
